Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Benjamin M. Thomas Student File

Student file of Benjamin M. Thomas, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880 and ultimately departed on September 17, 1890. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards and a report after leaving. The file indicates Thomas was a rancher in Laguna, New Mexico in 1907 and a rancher in Bibo, New Mexico in 1911.

Note: In the file the student is referred to as Benjamin M. Thomas and Bennie Thomas.

Student information card of Benjamin Thomas, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880 and departed on September 17, 1890. The file indicates that Thomas graduated in 1890 and was living in Bibo, New Mexico in 1913.

The file contains a student information card, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey indicating that Shields was working as a farmer and stock raiser in Algodones, New Mexico in 1910.

Nellie Carey Student File

Student file of Nellie Carey, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880, and departed on March 6, 1893.  The file contains student information cards, correspondence, former student response postcards, a news clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that Carey was working as a laundress in Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1915.

Mary Perry Student File

Student file of Mary Perry, a member of the Pueblo (Laguna) Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880, and ultimately departed on June 28, 1886. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, former student response postcards, a photograph, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating Perry was a housekeeper in Casa Blanco, New Mexico in 1910 and 1911 and a housewife living in Casa Blanco, New Mexico in 1913.

Henry Pratt Taawayite Student File

Student file of Henry Pratt Taawayite, a member of the Comanche Nation, who entered the school on September 1, 1880, and departed on May 9, 1881.  The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that Taawayite was working as a police officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and lived in Apache, Oklahoma.

Leonard William Tyler (Magpie) Student File

Student file of Leonard William Tyler (Magpie), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 6, 1880 and departed on September 18, 1883. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a returned student survey, news clippings, a report after leaving, and a letter/correspondence. The file indicates that Tyler was given his name at the school by the aunt of former U.S. President John Tyler. Additionally, Tyler worked as a farmer and stock raiser in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1909, 1910, and 1913.

Julia Bent Student File

Student file of Julia Bent, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 6, 1880 and ultimately departed on July 5, 1893. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a former student response postcard, returned student surveys, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Bent attended the Normal School in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania in 1892 and 1893, was an interpreter and keeping house for her family in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1907 and 1910, and was a housewife and interpreter in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1913.
