Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

U.S. Grant (Grant Lefthand) Student File

Student file of Grant Lefthand. No entrance or departure dates are given, and no Nation is given. The file contains a returned student survey and a report after leaving indicating that Lefthand was married to Kate Stalker and working as a clerk in an Indian Trader store in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1911.

Note: This person was known as U.S. Grant when he was a student. Grant was a member of the Arapaho nation who arrived at the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on June 21, 1881.

Ella Hippy Student File

Student file of Ella Hippy, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on July 1, 1882. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating Hippy was working as a housekeeper in Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1910.

Oscar Bull Bear Student File

Student file of Oscar Bull Bear, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and ultimately departed on September 15, 1885.  The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered.  The file contains student information cards, correspondence, and a report after leaving that indicates that he was working as a farmer in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1910.

Mohavito (Black Kettle) Student Information Card

Student information card of Mohavito (Black Kettle), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on February 19, 1882. He was buried in the cemetery at the school.

Note: This student was known by the names Mohavito and Motavito.

Student information card of Kate Ross, a member of the Wichita Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on January 10, 1882. She died at the school and was buried in the cemetery.

John Washa (Tomahawk) Student File

Student file of John Washa (also known as John Washee and Tomahawk), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on July 1, 1882.  The file contains a student information card, a newspaper clipping, correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates that in 1910 he was farming in Clinton, Oklahoma.

Albert Student Information Card

Student information card of Albert, a member of the Seminole Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and died on April 21, 1881 while attending the school. He was buried in the cemetery on the school grounds.

Note: In a letter about the first students to arrive at the school, Pratt refers to this student as Alberd. There are also two photographs in the collection of the Cumberland County Historial Society in which he is identified as Alberd.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a photograph, and a newspaper clipping. The files indicate that Doanmoe married Tone-adle-mah, and after leaving the school became a missionary.

Lucy Black Shortnose Student Information Card

Student information card of Lucy Black Shortnoes (here Lucy Black Short-nose), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on July 1, 1892. The file indicates Short-nose was married and living in Thomas, Oklahoma in 1913 and in Lame Deer, Montana in 1913.

Thomas Carlisle Student File

Student file of Thomas Carlisle, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on February 2, 1891.  The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates that he was working as a medical doctor in Watonga, Oklahoma, in 1910.

Note: Carlisle also went by the names Blackrobe and Tom Turner. Carlisle was the father of student Nina Carlisle.
