Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Student file of William Tivis, a member of the Comanche Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1880 and departed on September 17, 1890. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1909 Tivis had married Ko-cha-cha and was farming in Cement, Oklahoma.

Casper Edson (Casper) Student File

Student file of Casper Edson (Casper), a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on September 16, 1880 and ultimately departed on November 11, 1890. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards and a report after leaving that indicates Edson was a farmer in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1910.

Michael Burns Student File

Student file of Michael Burns, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on October 26, 1880, and departed on October 6, 1884.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a position card, a returned student survey, correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that Burns was working as a farmer in McDowell, Arizona, from 1914 to 1915.  The records also indicate that, in 1910, Burns was a student in the Riverside School of Riverside, California.

Joseph Payawesea Student File

Student file of Joseph Payawesea, a member of the Menominee Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880, and departed on June 17, 1884. The file contains a student information card, letters/correspondence, a photograph, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Payawesea was living in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1900 and a farmer in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1910.

Note: In this file the student's surname is identified as Payawesea, Pyawasay, and Payawasea.

Nellie Robertson Student File

Student file of Nellie Robertson, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880 and ultimately departed on July 2, 1896. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a photograph, news clippings, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Robertson graduated from the West Chester Normal School in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1896, was a teacher for four years at the Carlisle Indian School, a clerk in the Carlisle Indian School in 1907, the outing manager at the Carlisle Indian School in 1911, and was still working at the school in 1918.

The file contains a student information card, letters and correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating Minnie was working in the U.S. Army in 1915. 

Note: Minnie Atkins was involved in a court case: United States V. Minnie Atkins et. al in 1922.

Millie McIntosh Student File

Student file of Millie McIntosh, a member of the Creek Nation, who entered the school on January 22, 1881, and ultimately departed on March 25, 1890. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a photograph, letters and correspondence, a returned student survey, former student response postcards, and a report after leaving indicating McIntosh was a housewife living in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1915. 

Note: In this file the student is identified as Millie McIntosh, Mildred McIntosh, and Mildred (Millie) McIntosh Childers.
