Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Louis Eagle Dog (Big Boy) Student File

The file contains a student information card and a report after leaving that indicates Eagle Dog was working as a farmer in South Dakota in 1910.

Henry North Student Information Card

Student information card of Henry North, a member of the Arapaho Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1879 and departed on June 22, 1886. The file indicates North was living in Bridgeport, Oklahoma and Geary, Oklahoma in 1913.

Laura Doanmoe Student File

Student file of Laura Doanmoe, a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and ultimately departed on July 8, 1889. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, newspaper clippings, letters/correspondence, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating, Doanmore was a housewife living in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1911.

Note: In the file the student is referred to as Laura Toneadlemah, Laura Doanmore, and Laura Doanmoe.

Thomas Carlisle Student File

Student file of Thomas Carlisle, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on February 2, 1891.  The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates that he was working as a medical doctor in Watonga, Oklahoma, in 1910.

Note: Carlisle also went by the names Blackrobe and Tom Turner. Carlisle was the father of student Nina Carlisle.

John H. Williams Student File

Student file of John H. Williams, a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on July 1, 1882. The file contains a student information card, returned student survey, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving. According to the information provided he was farming in Canton, Oklahoma with his wife in 1913.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, one document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, William Cohoe. That document has now been included with the William Cohoe file: NARA_1327_box 7_ folder 302.

Geoffrey Chips Student File

Student file of Geoffrey Chips. No arrival or departure information is given, and no Nation is given. The file contains only a blank report after leaving. 

Note: Although the spelling in this file shows the last name as Chips, family members indicate that the proper spelling is Chipps. 

Note: Information in other records show Chips was a member of the Sioux nation from the Rosebud agency. He arrived at the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on June 19, 1882.

Albert Student Information Card

Student information card of Albert, a member of the Seminole Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and died on April 21, 1881 while attending the school. He was buried in the cemetery on the school grounds.

Note: In a letter about the first students to arrive at the school, Pratt refers to this student as Alberd. There are also two photographs in the collection of the Cumberland County Historial Society in which he is identified as Alberd.
