Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Student information card of Sallie Graybeard, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on August 14, 1918. The information card indicates that Graybeard had graduated in 1917.

Ella Israel Student File

Student file of Ella Israel, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on June 25, 1918. The file includes student information cards, an application for enrollment, letters/correspondence, a returned student survey, financial transactions, an outing evaluation, a progress report from Narberth High School, and an outing record. The file indicates that Israel graduated from Narberth High School in 1918.

Andrew Goforth Student Information Card

Student information card of Andrew Goforth, a member of the Choctaw Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914. The file indicates Goforth transferred to the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School in Oklahoma upon departing from Carlisle.

Welch Teesatesky Student File

Student file of Welch Teesatesky, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914, and departed on April 14, 1917. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, a photograph, a medical/physical record, an outing record, financial transactions, a report after leaving and letters/correspondence regarding Teesatesky's service in World War I. The file indicates he was serving as a naval officer on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania in 1917 and was stationed at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1918.

Note: The student is also referred to as Welch Teesateskee, Welch Teesataski, Welch Teesateskie, Welch Teesateske, Welch Tesateskey, Welch Tesatesky, and Welch Teesateska throughout the file.

Sallie Graybeard Student File

Student file of Sallie Greybeard, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on July 12, 1918. She was a part of the graduating class of 1917. The file contains a student information card, an application for enrollment, physical records, outing evaluations, letters/correspondence, financial transactions, certificates of promotion, and an outing record. After leaving Carlisle, Greybeard planned to train in nursing at the Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Note: In the file the student is referred to as Sallie Greybeard and Sallie Graybeard.

Student file of Jacob Spokogee, a member of the Creek Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on June 27, 1915. The file contains an application for enrollment, correspondence regarding enrollment at another school and other matters, financial transactions, medical/physical records, a progress/conduct card, and a student information card.

Student file of Raynear Clarke, a member of the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on October 10, 1916. The file contains an application for enrollment, a student information card, financial transactions, a medical/physical record, an outing evaluation, an outing record, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Clarke was living n Gowanda, New York in 1916.

James Thompson Student File

Student file of James Thompson, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on June 4, 1915. The file contains correspondence related to a hospital stay for the Grippe and tuberculosis, medical/physical records, a student information card, a progress/conduct card, and an application for enrollment indicating that Thompson attended Cherokee Boarding School prior to enrolling at Carlisle.

Note: Some of James Thompson's documents were originally found in the folder of another student; James West, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 99_folder 4331.

Dora Crowe Student File

Student file of Dora Crowe, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on January 1, 1917. A note in the file says the student re-enrolled on June 3, 1917 but no final departure date is given. The file includes student information cards, an application for enrollment, financial transactions, an outing record, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Crow was living in Toledo, Iowa in 1917.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Dora Crow, Dora Crowe, and Dora Del Crowe.

Mark Welch Student File

Student file of Mark Welch, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on September 5, 1917. The file contains a student information card, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, outing evaluations, a photograph, an outing record, financial transactions, a progress/conduct card, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates that Welch was working as a farmer in Stony, North Carolina in 1917.

Alice Crowe Student File

Student file of Alice Crowe, a memer of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914, and departed on June 7, 1918. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, outing evaluations, letters and correspondence, financial transactions, an outing record, and a certificate of promotion.

Robinson Smith Student Information Card

Student file of Robinson Smith, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1914 and departed on June 12, 1917. The file includes student information cards, a former student response postcard, an application for enrollment, a medical record, financial transactions, discliplinary records, letters/correspondence, and outing records. The file indicates that Smith moved to Cherokee, North Carolina after leaving Carlisle. 

Note: This student was referred to as Robinson Smith and Robertson Smith.

George W. Checote Student File

Student file of George W. Checote, a member of the Creek Nation, who entered the school on October 23, 1914 and departed on October 13, 1916. The file contains a student information card, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, financial transactions, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Checote was working at the American Iron and Steel Co. in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1916 and living in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1917.

Frances Perryman Student File

Student file of Frances Perryman, a member of Creek Nation, who entered the school on October 23, 1914 and departed on February 14, 1918. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, financial transactions, certificates of promotion, and letters and correspondence regarding finances, leasing of the student's land, and her time at the school. In a letter dated March 26, 1918, Frances writes that she has returned home to Beggs, Oklahoma, and has plans to go to California.

Note: In this file the student's name also appears as Francis Perryman.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, a document in this student file seemed to relate to another student, Madeline Keel. That document has now been included with the Madeline Keel file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 119_folder 4825.

Joseph Hicks Student File

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered.
