Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Raymond Stewart Student File

Student file of Raymond Stewart, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879, and ultimately departed on July 8, 1889. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, photographs, letters/correspondence related to the American Indian Association and Stewart's reflection on his time at Carlisle, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Stewart was a painter in Rosebud, South Dakota in 1910 and living in Rosebud, South Dakota in 1912.

Note: In this file the student is identified as both Raymond White Bull and Raymond Stewart.

Note: It is likely that Stewart married fellow student Amy Crowdog.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence related Milk's decision to not donate to the Alumni Association, a returned student survey, a photograph, and a report after leaving that indicates Milk was a farmer in St. Charles, South Dakota in 1912.

Student file of Clarence Three Stars (Packs the Dog), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on October 6, 1884. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, former student response postcards, a news clipping, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Three Stars was the State's Attorney for Bennett County in Martin, South Dakota in 1913.
