Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Charles Oheltoint Student File

Student file of Charles Oheltoint, a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on September 10, 1879, and departed on June 29, 1880.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating that Oheltoint was farming in Anadarkio, Oklahoma in 1914.

Note: Oheltoint also goes by the name Charley Buffalo in the record.

Little Chief Student File

Student file of Little Chief, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879, and departed on January 26, 1880.  The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates that he was farming in 1910 in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

Samuel High Bear (High Bear) Student File

Student file of Samuel High Bear (High Bear), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on December 15, 1884. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating High Bear was working as a farmer in St. Francis, South Dakota in 1910.

Student file of Julian (Cook in Guts), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879, and ultimately departed on February 20, 1884. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards.

Note: In this file the student is identified as both Julian (Cook in Guts) and Julian (Whistler).

Luther Standing Bear (Kills Plenty) Student File

Student file of Luther Standing Bear, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and departed on July 6, 1885. The file contains a student information card, former student response postcards, news clippings, correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating he was working as a clerk in a store in Sioux City, Iowa in 1913.

Paul Black Bear (Makes Himself Run) Student File
