These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. The caption reads: LOUIS TEWANIMA MARATHON RUNNER

The printed note reads: He is a full - blood Hopi Indian who came to Carlisle five years ago unable to speak English, with long hair and opposed to education. He is now one of the most studious and progressive students in the school. He is considered by experts as America's greatest long-distance runner and will represent the United States in the Olympic Games.

The printed note reads: Thorpe is a student of the Carlisle Indian School and last year was selected for the All-American football team. He has been selected to represent the United States in six events in the Olympic Games in Sweden, and is considered as a good candidate for honors for the all-round world's championship as an athlete.

It was sent to Mrs. Catharine Freeland, Newport, Perry Co., Pa.

The message reads "Dear Aunt Kate, I will send you a card I arived safe, Sarah and Saide met me at the train! Sarah has got right good agane I had ben sick a few days but am well again. We war out to visit the indian school on Thursday it is a lovly place Sadie went to Harrisburg to day to stay a few days then I will get to hear from home from aunt Beckie our idress 125 E. Louther St."
