The Images section features photographs, postcards, and different types of artwork, as well as reproductions of images that appeared in newspapers, magazines, and other publications. These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. Visitors to this website are also invited to share copies of photographs from their own personal and family collections; please contact us if you have images you would like to contribute.

The caption for this copy of the image and the copy at the Cumberland County Historical Society both identify this as the student body of the school in 1884. The caption on the Historical Society copy says there are 375 students in the group.

There may be another student at the far right of the bottom right; if there is, then there are twenty-five students in the picture.

Juan Julian, a visiting chief [version 2], c.1884

This person is identified as Juan Julian in the National Anthropological Archives negative version of this image and also in one of the Cumberland County Historical Society's copies (BS-CH-006). The copy located in the album (PA-CH2-075b) is labeled "Augustine." But that is probably a mistake. There are other photographs of a person with that name, wearing similar clothing but distinctly a different person.

Staff at the Cumberland County Historical Society identified three students based on comparison with other photographs: seated, from left to right Harry Marmon, Francis H. Ortiz, and James B. Garcia.
