The Documents section of the website features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

1898 Commencement Invitation and Brief Program

Date: March 1-3, 1898

An invitation for a Professor Heckman, probably Edgar Rohrer Heckman of Dickinson Preparatory School, to attend the 1898 commencement ceremony. It was the Nineteenth Anniversary and the Tenth Graduating Exercises of the school. The first page is an invitation, and the reverse features the program for the three-day event, March 1st to 3rd, 1898.

Poster for Mary Kolbe the Elocutionist, circa 1900

This poster advertises the performance of Mary Kolbe, "the little nine year old elocutionist," who was assisted by the Carlisle Indian School Band.  The event was held at Bosler Hall at Dickinson College. Transcript included.

Personnel File of John Francis Jr., Superintendent

Date: July 27, 1900 - October 27, 1919

Personnel file of John Francis Jr., who served as Superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School from April 1, 1917 to July 2, 1918. The file includes information from Francis' previous positions within the Civil Service, including as Clerk in the Permanent Census Bureau, Clerk in the Office of the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Clerk in the Office of the Assistant Attorney General, Law Clerk of the Department of the Interior, Chief Clerk of the Office of Indian Affairs, Chief of the Educational Division of the Office of Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior, and Lieutenant for the 16th Battalion of the United States Guards National Army.

The file includes quarterly inspects, newspaper clippings, resignations, employment applications, and employment-related correspondence.

Personnel File of William A. Mercer, Superintendent

Date: February 25, 1903 -

Personnel file of William A. Mercer, who served as the Superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School from July 1, 1904 to February 1, 1908. Before coming to Carlisle, Mercer was Captain of the Seventh United States Cavalry, and was also considered to become Superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School in 1903.

The file contains employment-related correspondence, special orders of the Department of War related to Mercer's appointment, and a letter of resignation from Mercer.
