The Documents section of the website features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

Letter from Richard H. Pratt to Cornelius R. Agnew, June 1, 1886

Date: June 1, 1886

Superindendent Richard Henry Pratt writes to Doctor Cornelius Rea Agnew regarding plans for new and renovated buildings at Carlisle.  Pratt states that he does not intend to take on more students, but rather to create a more individualized training environment.  He compares Carlisle's Congressional funding to Congressional funding for other schools, and also discusses school finances generally.  This letter is part of a series of related correspondence which can be found using the People tags.  Transcript included.

Date: October 12, 1886

Superindendent Richard Henry Pratt writes to Doctor Cornelius Rea Agnew informing him that the school had gained new students, raising enrollment higher than it had been before.  He also mentions the need for more money to improve school buildings. Letter from Richard H. Pratt to Cornelius R. Agnew, October 21, 1886

Date: October 21, 1886

Superintendent Richard Henry Pratt writes to Doctor Cornelius Rea Agnew regarding attempts to get a Mr. Moody to visit Carlisle.  Pratt also mentions that 75 or more Florida Apache prisoner children are expected to arrive at the school soon, and that the school was recently inspected by a Mrs. Clarke of Virginia.  This letter is part of a series of related correspondence which can be found using the People tags.  Transcript included.

"An Evening with the Carlisle Indian School," January 15, 1887

Date: January 15, 1887

An invitation for a series of exercises, performed by Carlisle Indian School students, which include industrial demonstrations, recitations, songs, drawings, and a debate.  The event was billed as a way to show "the capacity of the Indian to receive education," and was open to the general public.
