Student Recruitment in the Navajo Agency and Request to Visit the East

Date
January 25, 1889

C. E. Vandever, U.S. Indian Agent for the Navajo Agency, responds to an Office of Indian Affairs telegram to have him secure 50 Navajo students for the Carlisle Indian School. Vandever notes that it is difficult to secure Navajo students in normal times but at present the snow makes travel impossible and that he hopes to be able to secure 25 students.

Vandever further requests to take ten young Navajo men on a trip to the East to see various sights. He notes that this will have a greater impact than taking chiefs since they will be focused on the future and will further assist in keeping the peace between the U.S. and the Navajo Nation.
