Pratt Requests Authority to Recruit Students for 1887-1888 School Year

Date
July 4, 1887

Richard Henry Pratt notes that the Carlisle Indian School can have 650 to 675 students for the upcoming fiscal year on its Congressional appropriation compared to its current enrollment of 531. As a result Pratt notes that this would require bringing in 125 and 150 students many of whom could be students who were recently returned to the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Agencies who made arrangements to return. Pratt also notes that the Agent from Fort Berthold has offered a few students along with students from the Crow Agency.

Pratt further states that he would like to send his own agents out for choosing students in order to look out for the best interests of the school. As a result he requests authority to cover the expenses for transportation of the agents traveling to the agencies as well as for bringing students to Carlisle.
